QUEN CHIN April 13, 1923 - March 20, 2005 With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Quen Chin. Dad passed away on March 20, 2005 surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife Nellie; and his eight children, Suzanne, Yvonne (Jim), Nancy, Cathy (Bob), Colleen (Sheldon), Janice (Art), Robert (Shannon), Richard (Cindy); many grandchildren, Janelle, Reverly (Ryan), Brent, Michael (Ester), Duncan, Deborah, Matthew, Marc, Riley, James (Kathy), Lea-Anne, Analiza, MacKenzie, Amanda, Christopher; and great-grandchildren, Camryn, Holden, Jessica and Joseph. He will also be sadly missed by sisters, Bette (Vic), Evelyn (Jack); brothers, Bill (Nancy), Sam (Sue); sister-in-law Noreen; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, John and George; and sister-in-law Cenia. Quen and Nellie were married on October 6, 1945 in Vancouver, BC and had a strong lifelong partnership of 59 years. He was a devoted family man who worked diligently to provide for his family. For all who knew him, he was known to be a solid and dependable family and businessman who valued honesty, integrity and ethics in his interactions with people. Dad taught his children these values and to care about others. Contributing to the welfare of the community was very important to him. Dad instilled in his children a great pride in the Chinese culture and a respect for the culture of others. Dad was an involved member of the Chinese Free Masons and Chinese community for several years. Dad had many interests throughout his lifetime. He loved to learn and be challenged. Some of his interests were reading, current events and issues, listening to music, ballroom dancing, playing the banjo and guitar, tai chi, electronics, cooking and baking, home repairs and learning Mandarin. Dad was an educated man who was a qualified bookkeeper, stenographer, chef and entrepreneur. Dad and his brothers were innovative and courageous men who started a chain of restaurants under the Ricksha Company Ltd. This was Dad's proudest career achievement from 1948 to the Ricksha's closing in 1993 when he fell ill. Dad greatly loved and valued his business partners, employees and the many loyal patrons of the Ricksha restaurants; they were family. It was truly a community gathering place that served good food and offered friendship. Dad greatly missed the daily interaction of the business. Dad would surely have wanted to thank all family, friends, neighbours, business associates, medical professionals for their kindness to him and his family throughout the years. For the wonderful compassionate long-term care of Quen, our family thanks Dr. C. Polimeni, Dr. M. Ekins, Dr. E. Anhalt, Deer Lodge Centre T-4 staff, the many provincial and private home care providers, the Day Program staff at Tache Centre and Handi-Transit staff. All of you have made Dad's life more meaningful. During his most recent illness a very special thank you to Misericordia Urgent Care professionals and the Health Sciences Centre Emergency staff. To the GD4 and GH4 (Medicine Units), nurses, resident doctors, and support staff at the Health Sciences Centre, there are no adequate words to fully express our gratitude for your skill, expertise and caring compassion shown by every single one of you in the care of Quen and his family. We know you tried your utmost; we thank you for your efforts in easing Dad's transition from this life and the pain of our loss. You are all truly role models and leaders in the medical profession. Dad, thanks for giving us the most precious gifts of all, your love, your time and your values. We will love you forever, 'til we meet again. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., followed by interment at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Quen's memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or Hospice and Palliative Care.
