KATHERINE MARGARET HELGASON (nee WELHAM) 1956 - 2005 Peacefully on Monday, March 28, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, Kathy passed away at the Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 49. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband, Randy; her loving parents, Ernest and Helen; brother David and his wife Mary Anne; her two special nieces, Emma (her Godchild) and Katie. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Florence Helgason; her stepchildren, Sasha (Ken) and Blair (Sam); her sister-in-law Alma; brother-in-law Glenn Banish; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and her dog Zepplin. Kathy was predeceased by her grandparents, Edith and Reg Welham, Katherine and William Solar; her father-in-law Wilhelm Helgason; and Randy's nephew, Gary Banish. Kathy was a fun loving person, she enjoyed dancing and many outdoor activities. Her happiest times were going on a winter holiday and spending time with her nieces who she loved so very much. The cottage she and Randy built in Hecla was another special place for Kathy and many happy times were spent there with family and friends. Kathy was employed with the Manitoba Government for 25 years and was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 42 in Selkirk for 25 years. Special thanks to Dr. Seftel, Dr. Nancy , Meagan and all the staff at GD-6 in the Health Sciences Centre; Dr. Ryckman, Dr. Ducheck, nurses Michelle, Jamie and Sandra and the rest of the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital who took such good care of Kathy, also thanks to her Home Care Workers. Prayers will be said on Wednesday (tonight) at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. in the Christ Church Anglican, 227 McLean Ave., Selkirk with The Rev. Canon Bryan Bjerring officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Clements Cemetery. Her pallbearers will be Ricky Lloyd, Teddy and Warren Helgason, Doug Menard, Glenn Banish and Darrell Kupchik. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Christ Church Building Fund, 227 McLean Ave., Selkirk R1A 0T7 or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg R3E 0V9. Kathy, you will always be in our hearts. Rest in Peace. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
