DOROTHY JANE WALKER (nee BOWNESS) Dorothy passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Fred Douglas Lodge where she lived for the past six years. Dorothy was born May 9, 1919, and was raised in Winnipeg on Polson Avenue. She attended Champlain, Luxton and St. Johns High Schools. She was working at Eaton's mail order in Winnipeg where she met her husband to be, Leslie, in 1937. At the outbreak of the Second World War, she travelled to Esquimalt, BC to marry Leslie on November 7, 1939, who was on active service with the R.C.N.V.R. at the time. During the war years her two sons were born. John in 1941, and George in 1944. Predeceased by her parents, Edward and Stella Bowness and her namesake, Aunt Dora Mallinson. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Leslie; sons John (Gisele), George (Claire); grandchildren, Kristin and her family Gail, Christopher, and Alex, Jennifer and her family David, Mykenna and Emmy. Dorothy is also survived by her lifelong friend Jane Russell, and by many other friends and neighbours. When her sons were older Mom re-joined the work force at the accounts office and cosmetics department at the Hudsons Bay Co., and later at Centra Gas where she made many friends. In her later years Mom enjoyed oil painting, quilt making, bowling at Mosienko Lanes, and the company of her poodle Brandy. Her grandchildren whom she loved so much were a special joy. Mom had a caring concern for, and was genuinely grateful for her family. All who knew her loved her for her keen mind, kind heart, humour, and her bright blue eyes. We will cherish her memory always. Her butter tarts, brownies, and shortbread were the best. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all the nurses, staff, and volunteers on Oak Ward at Fred Douglas who made her stay as comfortable as could possibly be with her illnesses. She endured her pain with dignity and courage. Her suffering is now over. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arthritis Society, the Humane Society, or to a charity of one's choice. When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, Miss me but let me go. For this journey we all must take, And each must go alone, It's part of the Master's plan, A step on the road to Home. So when you are lonely and sick at heart, Go to the friends we know, And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, Miss me but let me go. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN ST. 338-7111 Friends and family are invited to sign the Book of Condolences at www.gleneden-mb.ca
