SISTER EDITH PATRICIA (Madeline McKittrick) Sister Edith Patricia died in beautiful serenity at Tache Centre on April 4, 2005. After two short years in the infirmary of the Holy Names Sisters at Residence Jesus-Marie, Sister Edith moved to Tache Centre in February of this year. Born in Los Angeles, California, in 1914 to Martin and Edith, Madeline lived in a number of different places, including Winnipeg. At the age of eight, her mother died. One year later when her father took ill, her Aunt Kate Hurley left Winnipeg to assist in raising young Madeline. Madeline enrolled in St. Mary's Academy as a sixth grader in 1925. Two years later, her father died. She continued at St. Mary's, completing her high school. After receiving her BA from St. Mary's Academy College in 1935, she then entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of the Holy Names in Outremont, QC. Sister Edith Patricia made her final vows in 1942. Sister Edith served in a number of schools: St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Ignatius in Winnipeg, Sir Maurice Roche in Flin Flon, and as a tutor in Kenora. However, she spent over 40 years at St. Mary's Academy. She was vice principal, superior, and accountant. She also taught for 43 years! She will be missed by her Holy Names Sisters and Associates, the caring staff of Residence, as well as her much loved cousin, Catherine Keating of Ottawa. She also will be missed by her many former students. She will be remembered as a good woman, a woman of deep faith with gentle, sincere ways. Thank you to the staff of Tache Centre who cared for her in the last weeks of her life. In lieu of flowers, friends of Sister Edith Patricia may make a donation to the St. Mary's Academy Foundation Bursary Fund, 550 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg, MB R3M 0C1. A prayer vigil will be held at Residence Jesus-Marie, 321 Avenue de la Cathedrale, in Saint Boniface, on Thursday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a reception. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford St., on Friday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Boniface Cemetery on Archibald St. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J COUTU CO. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Sister Edith taught me Latin, Grade 10 & Literature in Grade 11. I have always been hopeless at languages and was not doing well in my Latin. However, for the final exam she took mercy on me and passed me, only just barely. I was able to go on and continue with Latin and added to French it allowed me to have 2 languages for university study at the Masters & PhD levels. I would not be where I am professionally (teaching university history & as Dean of Studies, St. Paul's College) if it hadn't been for Sister Edith Patricia. - Posted by: Christine (Keegan) Butterill ('61) (Friend) on: Apr 23, 2005
