MAX SCHACHTER Max Schachter passed away peacefully on April 5, 2005. He was born in 1909 in Fort Francis, the oldest of 4 children and lived most of his life in Brandon and Winnipeg. During the difficult years of the Depression he helped and supported his parents and siblings while attending university in Brandon where he received his B.A. and later at Queens where he pursued a post-graduate degree in Economics. He started a wholesale linens business in about 1935 where he, his father and brother, Harold, worked for many years. While he was proud of the business he created, he always considered that his most important achievement was marrying Judy Sternberg and having his three children, Jay, Ray and Steve. Judy suffered from multiple sclerosis for 30 years and Max remained devoted to her until 1981 when she passed away. In 1988, he met Betty Patteson who became his second great love. With Betty he flourished, enjoying every moment. Max lived independently at 55 Nassau St., a large apartment complex near Osborne Village, until shortly before his death, where he became a source of inspiration for his community in the building and a broad network of other friends and acquaintances. Max was a superb communicator and had a genuine interest in people up to his last days. Max is survived by Betty, his three children and their partners, his many grandchildren and his one great-grandson, Raphael. A graveside funeral will take place on April 7 at 2:00 p.m., at Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park, followed by a celebration of his life at 3:00 p.m. in the Atrium at the North End Sharon Home, 146 Magnus St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Community Foundation - Max Schachter Family Fund, 200 - 950 West 41st Ave., Vancouver, BC, V5Z 2N7.
