Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES EDWARD ERNEST LEITKIE Charles (Chuck) Leitkie, our beloved father and husband to Hazel, passed away at Victoria General Hospital on April 5, 2005. Chuck was born on January 9, 1919 in Whitemouth, MB, son of Bill and Hannah (nee Boesem) Leitkie; and he is survived by his wife Hazel; daughters Doreen Kowal (Bob) and Heather; and sisters, Grace (Roy), Margaret (Norman), and Francis (Walter). Chuck was the much loved grandpa to Tyler and Trevor Kowal. Chuck attended Norwood High School and Wesley College where he obtained his grade 12, and Success Business College for further training. Sensing that war was eminent he joined the Number 10 Detachment, Royal Canadian Engineers (AF) in 1939, and served until he was sent to Gordonhead for officer training in 1943. That same year Hazel and Chuck married, and in 1944 he was transferred overseas and served until he was wounded on April 22, 1945. After the war he attended the University of British Columbia and graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Forestry. After university Chuck and Hazel returned to Winnipeg, and Chuck went to work for the Provincial Government, Department of Mines and Natural Resources. After 33 years with the province he retired in 1984. Over the years Chuck was active in a variety of organizations including the Manitoba Sports Federation, the Manitoba Badminton Association, the Winnipeg Safety Council where he taught Defensive Driving courses, the Circle Four and Cardinal Eights square dance clubs, St. Paul's Anglican Church, and the Refit Centre. He was an active member of the Winnipeg Winter Club, and the Wildewood Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was also a National Umpire for badminton. Chuck's many other interests included fishing, shooting, travelling and surfing the net! A memorial service will be held for Chuck on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivray Boul., with Rev. Dr. Brett Cane officiating. Should friends desire, donations may be made to St. Aidan's Church, Kingsway and Campbell Street, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
