MYRTLE RIETTA CONWAY Born January 28, 1908 in Miniota, MB. Died April 5, 2005 in Victoria, BC. After earning her Normal School Certificate and B.A. from the University of Manitoba (later a B.Ed) Myrtle started teaching at age 19 in Ebor, MB. She taught in Neepawa and Gladstone and then moved to Winnipeg during the war to Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. In 1949 she was appointed principal of the new Clifton Elementary School and later principal of LaVerendrye and Rockwood Schools. In the late l940s and 1950s she was much involved in educational organizations as President of the Manitoba Teachers' Society, the Manitoba Educational Association, and the Canadian Teachers' Federation. She attended sessions of the World Confederation of Organization of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) in Oxford and Copenhagen. In 1948 she was one of only three Canadian delegates to the second international seminar (six-week study session) of UNESCO in New York. She was also a member of the Canadian delegation to the seventh annual UNESCO conference in Paris. In 1952 the University of Manitoba awarded her an honorary doctorate of laws. Myrtle was active also with the Provincial and National Councils of Women, the Zonta (Aurora) Club and the Winnipeg University Women's Club. She went to a number of International Federation of University Women's Clubs conferences, leading a seminar at one in Japan. After her retirement, Myrtle continued to live independently in Winnipeg until failing health forced her to move to Victoria at the end of 2003. She is survived by her sister-in-law Ellen Conway, and nieces and nephews and their families, Dave (Zita), Michael (Karen), Elizabeth, Jacquie (Aaron), Jennifer (Michael), Ann Rosemary, Lisa, Katie, Nicholas, and Jeffrey. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Thomson Funeral Home.
