HELEN LUCINDA GRACEY Peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2005, Helen passed into the presence of her Lord. Born July 10, 1916, at Oxbow, SK, Helen was the middle child of Irish immigrants. Life was not easy for this pioneering family with her father passing away before Thomas, her brother, was born leaving her mother to raise the three children alone. Honouring a promise to her husband, Helen's mother ensured that all three children received a full education. Helen moved to Winnipeg where she obtained her registered nursing credentials from the Misericorida General Hospital in 1943, being awarded the surgical medal for her class. Helen never left the service of the Misericordia, although she (with her sister Elizabeth, also a nurse at the Misericordia) took a leave of absence at age of 48 to enroll in the University of Manitoba. Both Helen and Elizabeth obtained their bachelor degrees in nursing from the University in 1969. Helen retired from the service of the Misericordia Hospital in the position of Obstetrics Supervisor. Helen joins her mother Margaret and father Thomas, her sister Elizabeth and her brother Thomas along with his wife Evelyn in the House of our Lord. She is survived and much loved by her three nieces, Margo, Leslee and Susan; and her great-nephew Josh Thomas. The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverview Health Centre, and in particular, her dear friends, Joan, Roberta and Evadna who made sure that they were always there for her. The interment will take place at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 15 at Brookside Cemetery to be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. In lieu of flowers donations maybe made to your charity of choice. THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 Broadway - 783-7211

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Helen and Betty were special friends of my parents before I was born, and thus became a special part of my life. As a child I loved visiting their apartment because they had such neat things for kids. As an adult I have treasured their wisdom and kindness. I am thankful to have had them in my life. - Posted by: Janet Edgar Taylor (Friend) on: Apr 14, 2005

  • Helen was one of my heroes in life. I absolutely adored her. She was kind, quiet spoken, strong, and humble. Helen and Betty were key figures in my growing up years and I always felt loved and listened to by them. They lived what they believed. I thank God for the privilege of having Helen and Betty in my life. - Posted by: Kathy Edgar Emery (Friend) on: Apr 13, 2005
