Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGARFIELD MONKMAN After a courageous battle with cancer, Garf passed away on April 9, 2005 at Selkirk General Hospital. Garf was born May 23, 1920 at Loon Straits where he spent a big part of his life. He was predeceased by parents, William and Rose Ann; daughter Eileen; son Curtis; sisters, Violet, Thelma, Doris and Olive; brothers, Joe, Hector, Harry, Willy and Lawrence. He will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind, wife Gladys of 59 years; children, Belle (Art), Logan Lake, BC, Marie (George), Yellowknife, NWT, Bud (Gail), Gillam, MB, Peggy (Bill), Gillam, MB, Bob (Kelly), Oakbank, MB, Kathy, Yellowknife, NWT; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister Laura Mowat, Winnipeg, MB; brother Bert, Riverton, MB and sister-in-law Elsie, Selkirk, MB. Also left to mourn are numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In his early years, Garf commercial fished and trapped. Garf's interest in aviation began when he saw the old Curtiss Flying Boats flying over their home at Loon Straits. After a good fishing season in 1950, Garf was able to pay his way for pilot's training and to purchase his first plane, a Fleet Canuck CF-DZY, for $1700. Garf will be remembered for his very creative and innovative mind and strong mechanical ability. He built many contraptions, which enhanced the lives of those who lived around him. His inventions dealt with improving tools, equipment and methods for living, working and travel in the north. Garf's passion to fly continues on in his sons and many others he influenced. The family would like to thank Home Care and the nurses and staff of the Selkirk General Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. Flowers gratefully declined. Should friends desire, donations in Garfield's memory may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9. Cremation has taken place at Garf's request. A memorial service officiated by John Thomas will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 at Good Shephard Lutheran Church, 6088 PTH 9A, south of the Selkirk Rolling Mill in Selkirk.
