WALTER AFANASIEV Husband of Elizabeth (Betty) After a five month struggle with cancer, Walter, 73, passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on Monday, April 11, 2005. Walter is lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Betty; sons, Russell of Santa Monica, CA and Philip of Bangkok, Thailand; and daughter Lisa Champagne (Claude) with granddaughters, Jasmine and Chelsea of Winnipeg; brother Konstantine (Milla); stepmother Emilia; plus nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his mother Lucretia, father Leonid and brother Alex. Following the war, Walter earned his diploma in Orthopaedic Shoe making in his native Yugoslavia. After arriving in Canada in 1951, he laboured for a time in the footwear industry before opening his own company to proudly practice his craft and serve the community, creating custom designed and handcrafted footwear for clients across Canada. Our most sincere gratitude to all the medical staff at Riverview for their wonderful care and compassion. Also our sincere thanks to medical staff of the Concordia and St. Boniface Hospitals and to all our friends, neighbours, family and the wonderful home care workers for their support and kindness. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and reception will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at St. James United Church, 234 Parkview St. at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will be held at a future date in the family plot in East Braintree, MB.
