JAMES ARTHUR COULTER LL.D., O.M. It is with great sadness that the family of James Arthur Art Coulter announces his passing after a brief illness on Monday, April 11, 2005, at the age of 88. Art was born on October 20, 1916 to Lily Jane Caskey and James Coulter and grew up in Weston. After graduating from Cecil Rhodes and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, Art went on to work for Canada Malting where he started his lifelong dedication to the labour movement. Art married Doris Lauderdale, the love of his life, in 1940 and then started his four-year term for the Canadian Air Force where he achieved the rank of Flight Sergeant. Upon returning to Winnipeg, Art became more involved in the union, organizing the shop and volunteering his time on committees and with the union executive. In the mid 1950's, Art became the Secretary Treasurer of the Winnipeg Labour Council and was elected to city council. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Dear Val and Coulter family, I was saddened to hear of the death of your father. After reading his obituary I was amazed at the number of important works he was involved in. I hope our flowers arrived in time for the funeral. (We saw the decline of flowers too late) My aunt Donna (Stanley's wife's sister)said she was going to the funeral to represent Dave and I as we both live in the east . I hope you saw and spoke to her . Thank you for the many times you helped with my dad. Margi. - Posted by: Margaret Knowles Plaxton (Friend) on: Apr 23, 2005

  • Yes, thou art gone and never more Thy sunny smile shall gladden me; But I may pass the old church door, And pace the floor that covers thee. May stand upon the cold, damp stone, And think that, frozen, lies below, The lightest heart that I have known, The kindest I shall ever know. Yet, though I cannot see thee more, 'Tis still a comfort to have seen; And though thy transient life is o'er, 'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been . -Anne Bronte, 1844 - Posted by: Jeff, Kim, Stephanie, Thomas & Allison Campbell (Family) on: Apr 14, 2005
