She married Lawrence Gerald Latimer in 1932 and they had three sons, Lawrence Gerald Jr., Terrance Ronald and Keith Hjorleifson. The 1930s saw the young family move from farming to mining and north to the new mining community of Sherridon, MB, in 1938 and finally to Lynn Lake, MB, in 1951 with the town that moved. Hazel was a teacher to multiple generations of Sherridon / Lynn Lakers and thoroughly enjoyed all 60 years of teaching. She was a founding member of the Lynn Lake library and was on the town council, Deputy Mayor and all around community leader to all who knew her. She received numerous service awards from the community of Lynn Lake and on May 28, 1983 the province of Manitoba honoured her as citizen of the year in Winnipeg, an outstanding achievement that we are all very proud of. She cherished all of the people that were a part of her life and will be greatly missed by her family and the extended community of present and former Lynn Lakers. Hazel passed away peacefully at Lynn Lake Hospital on April 10, 2005, at the age of 98. Hazel is survived by her sons, Ronnie (Rose) and Keith (Lorette) and daughter-in-law Helen; grandchildren, Dene (Debbie), Desiree (Carlos), Deri (Randy), Devin (Keri), Christine, Taren (Darren), Shannon (Jody), and Tami, as well as great-grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey, Mercege, Jagger, Ali, Max, Darrick (Angie), Steve, Rachelle, Danielle, Keith, Christina, Lane, and Kayla. On behalf of the Yip family, our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of this wonderful woman. Our family had very fond memories of Mrs. Latimer and remember her as a very caring and kind-hearted woman. My mom and dad always spoke kind words of her. She was a teacher to my older sisters and our family shared good moments with her and her family. - Posted by: Effie Monson (Acquaintance) on: Apr 21, 2005

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a truly great lady. "Granma" Latimer was a legend in her own time. She was never without a smile for those she knew well, or even those she knew casually. Our deepest condolences to the family. To the entire family; I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you all, in your time of loss. Those of us who went to school in Lynn Lake, were involved in sports and the community, knew Hazel well and unfortunately she knew the kids TOO well and always kept us in line with a caring word. She is a legend, to many generations of Lynn Lakers and will be dearly missed. - Posted by: wolfgang walter (Acquaintance) on: Apr 18, 2005

I will cherish the many memories of your Mom forever in my heart. She taught me and my oldest son Wallace Holden - what a legacy she has given to us. I loved her smile and little giggle; her willingness to always have an open door at her home. She was so proud of her family. Hazel was a true lady , kind, compassionate and caring . What a legacy she has left for all of you to remember and cherish. Talk of her often to everyone - they will love her story of life. God be with you all..
