Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALEXANDER WILLIAM SAWCHUK It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Alex Sawchuk on Friday, April 15, 2005. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Gary (Karen), Debbie (Mike), Russell (Donna); and his grandchildren, Trisha, Bill, Corey, Heather, Brittany and John. Alex also leaves to mourn his older brother John. Alex was predeceased by his wife of 53 years Helen, and sisters, Ollie and Betty. Alex, the youngest of four children, was born November 13, 1927 in Poland. Alex was a baby when the family immigrated to Canada to farm and settled in Glenella, MB. After graduating high school, Alex moved to British Columbia and worked in a lumber camp as a tree topper. Later he moved to Winnipeg, and married Helen on July 14, 1951. They bought a home and settled in St. Vital where they raised their family and lived for the next 50 years. After a 36 year career with the CNR as a Fireman and then Locomotive Engineer, Alex retired in 1988. Alex had a strong work ethic which he instilled in his children. Throughout his adult life and especially during retirement Alex took special pride in his garden, sowing, hoeing and harvesting his vegetables. He enjoyed sharing his bountiful harvest with those who were not blessed with a green thumb, especially his children. He had a competitive edge when it came to growing the biggest tomato in the neighborhood. He loved his begonias and took pride planting them in front of the house. Special thanks to the staff of Vista Park Nursing Home and Victoria Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 E. at Navin Road. Interment to follow in Green Acres Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
