HOWARD ANDREW THOMPSON 1932 - 2005 On Saturday, April 16, 2005, with his family by his side, Howard Thompson passed away at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 72. He is survived by his beloved wife Lorrie; daughter Karen (Michael) Debroni and daughter Susan (Jeffrey) Sinclair and granddaughter Jamie Drew Sinclair (born April 7, 2005). Also survived by his two brothers, Gordon (Dorothy) and Leonard (Vi) as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his parents William and Gertrude, and brother Jimmy in infancy. Born and raised in the north end, Howie had many fond memories of his childhood and youth there. Throughout his life, he frequently returned to his old stomping grounds to pick up fresh rye bread, perogies, borscht, dill pickles, goldeye and many other Winnipeg delicacies. He graduated from Isaac Newton High School in 1949 and began his career at Manitoba Telephone System, retiring in 1991 after 42 years of service. Highlights of his career included managing the communications for the 1967 Pan Am Games and the 1984 Papal visit. Howard was a member of the Winnipeg Badminton Club for many years, where he created many lifelong friendships and cherished memories. What time does the 4:00 bus leave? Howard proudly golfed at Pine Ridge Golf Club for 48 years. He was an avid player and fan of the sport. He was especially thrilled with his hole-in-one in 2003 on the 9th at The Ridge , a hole nationally regarded as one of the 18 toughest in Canada! For 50 years, Howard was a cottager at Betula Lake where he always had a building project on the go or a fishing rod in his hand. He enjoyed many a happy hour with his friends and family at the lake. During his life, Howard saw much of the world. He treasured his frequent trips with his friends and family throughout Canada and the USA, and his special vacations in Ireland, England, Wales, Europe and Australia. Special thanks to the staff who cared for Howard at the Grace Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre. A celebration of Howie's life will be held at Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Dr. on Saturday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are Gerry Bullman, Bill Candaele, Norm Lobson, Evan MacKenzie, Don Mitchell and Ron Smith. Remembrances in Howard's name may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund at 200 Main St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4M2. • Lorrie & family, Sorry to hear of your loss. We haven't seen Howie for some years, but counted him a very dear friend. He was best man at our wedding, and a golfing buddy for many a good game at Pine Ridge and Elmhurst. Please accept our sincere sympathy in your loss. We wish you well. Harry. - Posted by: Harry & Gladys Holmes (Friend) on: Apr 22, 2005
