Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCORENE KATHLEEN CASSELS It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Corene Kathleen Cassels of Winnipeg, on Friday, April 15, 2005, at her residence, at the age of 52 years. She was a beloved daughter, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. Corene will be dearly missed by her mother Irene Cassels (Mel) of Manitou; her three loving sons, Ryan Land (Carmilla) of Bruno, SK, Shea Land of Lundar and Darby Land (Shera) of Winnipeg; her grandchildren, Cohen, Bronte and Materia; her brothers, Ron (Ruth) and Jim (Els) and their children; Mel's children, Marianne (Steve) Hawkins of Minnesota and Daryl; and Ken Land of Winnipeg, father of their children. She was predeceased by her father Ed Cassels in 1990. On December 7, 1952, Corene was born and lived in the Kaleida area for her first six years of her life, until the family moved to a farm near Manitou. She moved to Winnipeg as a young woman and since lived in Edmonton, Sherwood Park and Vancouver. Wherever she lived, she maintained a strong love for the Canadian wilderness and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was camping, hiking, spending time at the cottage, or hitting the open road. Throughout her life, Corene dedicated herself to helping others and to caring for animals. As a young woman, she participated in 4-H and C.G.I.T. She volunteered as a support person, as a camp leader, as a community club parent and for a number of charitable organizations. Corene adopted numerous animals throughout her life and was an advocate for animal shelters and rights. She was an active parent, starting a playschool and running early years programs in Edmonton, where she also successfully fought against the development of a rendering plant. In both, Edmonton and Winnipeg, Corene was involved in Block Parents and was a dedicated sports parent. She also invested much of her time into her family's genealogy. Corene's funeral service was held on Friday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Rd. Winnipeg, MB with Bev Ward officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Corene's memory may be made to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3K 0Y1.
