Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD HOWARD LAWSON 1923 - 2005 Peacefully on April 21, 2005 at the Gimli Community Health Centre, Edward Lawson, aged 82 years, late of Gimli, MB, beloved husband of Beatrice. Edward was born and raised in Darlingford, MB and attended Calf Mountain School. When he was 17 he joined the armed forces and served overseas for five years in England, The Netherlands and Italy where he was wounded and ended up in a North African hospital. On returning home he met and married Beatrice and together they raised two children, Hollis and Darrell. Their first home was in Winnipeg where Edward worked for Winnipeg Transit and then Liquid Air. At this time he also helped his mother and stepfather establish a resort at Lake Brereton. He then rejoined the army and the family's next move was to Victoria, BC, then Germany and back to Winnipeg. During these 20 years, Edward was often away from his family, doing duty in Wainwright, Suffield and Shilo. In his off hours the family enjoyed camping trips, toboggan rides at Lockport, bonfires at the hobby farm in Inwood and swimming in the gravel pit nearby with the grandkids. He, like his father, always had a great love for horses and this has been passed on to his son. For recreation he golfed, curled and bowled, and he loved reading, especially books by Louis L'Amour. He spent lots of volunteer hours at the Legion and worked many years with the Boy Scouts, as well as many hours following his grandsons around golf courses. After retiring from the army, Edward and Beatrice spent the next 16 years between their cottage at Buffalo Point and their home in Florida, eventually moving out to Aspen Park near Gimli. There Edward enjoyed riding on his scooter or sitting in the yard admiring the flowers and the birds, and talking to the neighbours. Edward leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 59 years Beatrice; his daughter Holli and her husband David Roland; his son Darrell and his wife Maggie; as well as grandsons, Scott and Ryan; four great-grandkids; his sister Pearl; and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, one sister and his eldest grandson Darrell, which broke his heart. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Headingley United Church, 110 Bridge St. on Monday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. George Davidson officiating. The ashes will be interred at Darlingford Cemetery in the family plot at a later date. We will gather at the River. If friends desire, a donation may be sent to the Lung Association of Manitoba in Edward's memory, no flowers, please. Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli in care of arrangements.
