RICHARD (DICK) CECIL ROGERS 1916 - 2005 Dick Rogers, peacefully on April 23, 2005 passed away at the Concordia Hospital with his family at his side at the age of 88. Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg living his early years in the Brooklands area and attending Cecil Rhodes School. Dad was employed at the Weston Shops as a boilermaker until he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy where he was assigned to the HMS Battleford. At the end of the war Dad returned to the Weston Shops until he found an opportunity with the Winnipeg School Board as a control mechanic where he stayed until his retirement. Dad enjoyed many pursuits and in his younger years baseball was one of the sports he excelled at. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his spare time hunting and fishing. He was also an excellent marksmen and truly enjoyed target shooting. Dad was heavily involved with the Hunter Safety Program in Winnipeg and spent many hours as an instructor and range officer. In his later years he joined the Winnipeg Camerons Rifle Association to continue target shooting at Minto Armories and St. Charles Range. During this time he also coached the Air Cadets junior rifle team which was always a great pride to him. Dad moved to Calgary for a short time and continued with shooting and also took up trap shooting. Dad was also a member of the Masonic Order of Acadia Lodge in Winnipeg and a member of the Transcona Legion. In moving back to Winnipeg after the passing of his wife Mary he took up residence at the Lions Manor and had many good friends to enjoy his later years with. Dad was involved with the Resident Council and set up a small group to play pool in the afternoon. He also had a special friend Ruth who gave him great joy with her friendship and companionship. Dad will be deeply missed by all of the family, son Richard (Dianne); daughter Darlene (Pierre); stepdaughters, Barb (Don) and Thelma; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
