HELGI STEINTHOR HOLM November 20, 1917 - April 22, 2005 Peacefully, after a long and happy life, Steinthor passed away at the Arborg and District Regional Health Centre. He will be missed by Marguerite, his wife of 55 years and their two children, Barbara Weik (Albert) and Dale Holm (Cookie), along with four grandchildren, Dean Weik, Jeffrey Weik, Kelly Weik and Andrea Thomasson. He is also survived by his sister Olga Johanesson; brother-in-law Baldur Stefanson and sisters-in-law, Doris Hallet, Monica Sigurdson, Addie Foster and Veronica Foster. Steinthor was predeceased by his parents, Egill and Rosa; his two brothers, Wilfrid and Ragnar; sisters-in-law, Vilborg Holm, Begga Holm, Edith Winther, Phyllis Sigvaldason, Mabel Stefanson, Ellen Foster; brothers-in-law, Joe Palsson, Thor Johannesson, Harold (Bud) Foster, Tom Foster, Ray Foster and nephews, Baldur Palsson, Wayne Foster and Neil Winther. Until moving to Arborg in 2001, Steinthor and Marge lived and raised their family on the farm his parents homesteaded in Vidir, MB. Along with farming, Steinthor worked for Manitoba Crop Insurance for several years, getting to know farmers throughout the Interlake. And, he was an active member of both the Vidir and Arborg communities, serving on many committees and boards. He was most proud of being a member of the Arborg Hospital Board for 17 years, serving as chairman for more than 10 years. Steinthor was happiest when he was around people, especially young people. After retiring from the farm, he joined his brother Wilfrid working at the Arborg curling rink, later becoming ice maker. It was the ideal retirement job as the rink was filled with children most afternoons. He was pleased that kids all over town can mispronounce my name . He was also recently pleased to have been made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Arborg Curling Club. During the last years of his life, Steinthor grew increasingly dependent on other people. Marge devoted herself to his care, but eventually needed help. Steinthor was grateful to the homecare workers who helped him, and looked forward to their visits. They made his last weeks happier for both Steinthor and his family. The family is grateful to our many friends and relatives who helped in so many ways, especially his two nephews, Clifford and Marshall who were always there with a helping hand or a game of pool. Following a family graveside ceremony, a memorial service will be held in the Ardal/Geysir Lutheran Church, Arborg on Saturday, April 30 at 2:30 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined, but donations may be made to the Ardal/Geysir Lutheran Church, Arborg. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Margie, Barb and Dale & families, I am so sorry on your loss. Next to my dad, Steinthor was the nicest, sweetest man I ever met. I believe he also had the best sense of humour of anybody I ever met. I won't be able to attend the funeral on Saturday but my thoughts will be with you.
