CODY GARRETT MCLEAN (BELBAS)
Born: Dec 30, 1997
Date of Passing: Apr 26, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCODY GARRETT MCLEAN (BELBAS) December 30, 1997 - April 26, 2005 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved little boy Cody, who slipped away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at Winnipeg Children's Hospital in the loving arms of his family at the age of 7 years. Left to cherish Cody's memory are his parents, Sam and Leanne; big brother Tanner; grandparents, Bob and Gerry Belbas and Norma and Dave Richards; aunt Lynn Kjartanson (Mike); uncle Ryan Belbas (Leslie); uncle Albert McLean (Brenda); aunt Melanie McLean (Denis); half-sister Vanessa Hines; cousins, Taylor and Brody Kjartanson and Carson and Kate McLean; and his many friends. Cody touched the lives of so many with his strength, bravery, laughter and loving spirit. He had a gift for knowing just what you needed, a hug, a kiss, a gentle word, he cared deeply how others felt and tried to make them happy. Cody was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour in November 2000. He underwent two major surgeries, chemo therapy and radiation without fear. He was cancer free for almost two years before the tumour returned and took him from us. Cody had such a love of life and fought so courageously during the short time he was here, he didn't let anything stop him from doing the things he loved to do. He went to school, played soccer, learned to skate, participated in Beavers, played golf, he loved riding his scooter and doing crafts. His favourite thing was playing with his friends, his brother, his cousins and his dog Jagger and hamster Hamtaro . He loved spending time at Grandma and Poppa's cottage in the summer but his favourite place to be was at home with his mom, dad and Tanner. Cody has taught us to love life and all it has to offer, to hold onto the memories of the fun we had and the love we shared, that was Cody's purpose, that was Cody's gift to us. Cody's funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30 at 2:30 p.m. in the First Alliance Church, The Bridge , 620 Oxbow Bend Rd., Winnipeg with Dr. Brian Brglez officiating. Interment will follow in the Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Christante, Dr. McDonald, Dr. Stobart, Dr. McCusker, Cathy Bourne, Jennie Pitoura, Dawn Kidder, nursing staff of CK5, MRI team, radiology team, all our drivers from the Volunteer Driver Program including Donna and Teresa and the pediatric oncology team for giving Cody the quality care he received. Special thank you to the town of Gillam and the RCMP horsemen for organizing the benefit hockey game for Cody, Beaverlodge School for all you have done for Cody and Tanner and to our family and friends who have been by our side through these difficult times. In 2002, the Children's Wish Foundation granted Cody's wish to visit Disney World, without them we could never have made his dream come true. We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cody's name to the Children's Wish Foundation, 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2 or to the Child Life Department at Winnipeg Children's Hospital, 840 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1S1, because of them Cody looked forward to the time he spent in the hospital and at CancerCare. I miss him so much, and 9 years have passed as of last month. Cody was and still is a big inspiration in my life. I think about him almost daily. Him and I planted a flower seed together a few months before he passed.. and believe it or not, the beautiful flower is still growing and healthy. It wasn't supposed to last this long. It was only supposed to last 2 years. Cody is the most amazing human being there ever was/is.. and I miss him so much. I have pictures of us at our Christmas concert in Beaverlodge still framed and hanging in my living room. Miss you so much bud. Rest is paradise. - Posted by: sydney (same class, good friends) on: May 10, 2014

I'm turning 17, next month, and I still have not forgetton about my childhood friend. His mother used to babysit me when I was younger, I remember going there on weekends and watching the familys favourite Lord of The Rings Movies, and playing Furbys until we had to be sent off to school. I'll never forget you Cody. - Posted by: Brittany Valcourt (Friend) on: Apr 26, 2012

I was honoured to be one of Cody's volunteer drivers several years back. I recall with great clarity how he backseat drove enroute to his treatment. Warning me to miss the bus cause there would be a big bang. On one occasion, we stopped at Assiniboine Park to see the Bison. I will miss my wee friend. I'm glad he is at peace. - Posted by: M. Cody was not only a classmate but a friend who will live in my heart forever. He was the best speller and never coloured outside the lines, it was like magic. Cody was the best behaved boy in the whole school and always used his manners. I duelled Cody in YuGiYo and he always won, he was the strongest player, a true master. I want to be a scientist when I grow up to fight Cancer. Cody is my hero. - Posted by: Quin Ambeault (Friend) on: May 04, 2005
