LISA MEIER (nee MERKLINGER) 1923 - 2005 On Wednesday evening, April 27, 2005, after a brief illness, a beautiful, caring wife, mother, oma and great-oma was taken peacefully from our lives while surrounded by family. She will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband of 53 years, Walter; children, George (Pat), Pete (Lynn), Jan (Jim), Angie (Will) and Rosey (Gord); grandchildren, Jennifer (Willy), Jeffrey and Neil Meier, Jimmy Seekings, Drew and Lindsay Martin; great-grandson Jayce Meier and great-granddaughter Meier due any day now. She will also be lovingly remembered by her two surviving sisters, Rosa and Katia of Germany; and many other relatives in Germany. Mom was born in the Ukraine on July 24, 1923. She met Dad on a blind date in Germany in 1950 and they were married in 1951. Dad came to Canada in 1953, found employment and sent for Mom who came to Winnipeg in May 1954 by ship with George (2) and Pete (1) in tow. Later Jan and Angie were born. Mom was always a dedicated and hard worker and even with four children, she continued to work as a nurse's aid at the Women's Pavilion in Winnipeg until the birth of her fifth child Rosey. The family moved to Selkirk in 1965 and became owners and caretakers of the Lord Selkirk Apartments for 11 years. Mom spent many hours keeping the apartment block spotless and chatting with all the tenants. Family was everything to Mom, and she always put her husband, children and grandchildren first and greeted everyone with a beautiful, warm smile. She was well known for her wonderful home cooking and baking, and anyone who stopped by the Meier household knew they were not leaving until they had something to eat. Her favourite saying was, Eat, eat, eat - there is always lots here. Mom was an avid bridge player and enjoyed all card games. Many family get togethers were spent sitting around the table trying to beat mom at the card game of choice until the wee hours of the morning. She also enjoyed her Thursday morning bowling league. Her kindness, generosity and smile will be remembered forever and will be missed dearly. We have truly been blessed to have known her, loved her and been loved by her. Oma, you are now in God's Care and until we meet again, we will miss you. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the exceptional homecare nurses and aides who allowed us to keep mom at home as long as possible. We would also like to thank the doctors and nurses at Selkirk General Hospital for their care as well as the many friends who visited mom during her illness. Prayers will be offered on Sunday evening, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Gilbart's Funeral Home in Selkirk. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, May 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Bogaslaw Wardzinski officiating. Interment to follow at the Notre Dame Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Emil Wagner, Bert Parker, Ted Neskar, Art Tibold, Clive Rennie and Robert Komzak. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Bosak, Joe Banash, Walter Budy, Len Manahan, David Borgfjord, Lorne Nicol and the Knights of Columbus Honour Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Selkirk General Hospital Palliative Care. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
