RICHARD GREY STUART Richard (Rick) Grey Stuart, born May 19, 1946 in Saint Boniface, MB, died Friday, April 29, 2005 in Ottawa, ON. Predeceased by his father, Dr. Frank Grey, survived by mother Beatrice Ileen, brothers, Gordon Francis (Nancy) and Fr. Ian Charles; first wife Mary Patricia; and children, Alexander Grey (Marlo) and Rebecca Elizabeth, born 1972 and 1976 respectively; as well as wife Sally Eleanor; and stepchildren, Tammy (Chris), Leon (Darlene) and Leah (Neil). Rick obtained a BA from the University of Manitoba and MA from the University of British Columbia, after which he and Mary served as co-operant teachers with CUSO in Malawi from 1968 to 1970. As a result of this experience, Rick changed his educational focus from Canadian to African history, earning his Ph.D. in 1974 from the School of Oriental and African Studies, in London, UK. He then taught at the University of Toronto from 1974 to 1978, after which he drew on his Canadian History background when he joined Parks Canada in 1977, working in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Ottawa until 2005, most recently for the National Historic Sites branch. He also continued teaching at universities in these cities which enabled him to gratify his love on African, Canadian, and later Environmental History. Besides his love for family and scholarship, Rick was able to indulge his passion for the outdoors as a hiker, climber, backcountry skier and canoeist, particularly after he married Sally in 1995. We will always remember Rick for his unending curiosity about and exuberant enjoyment of life. Friends are invited to join the family for prayers and a celebration of Rick's life at the Kelly Funeral Home, 1255 Walkley Rd., Ottawa, Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral on Tuesday at St. Margaret Mary's Church, Ottawa for Mass of Christian Funeral at 1:00 p.m. In memoriam donations to the VON Ottawa-Carleton or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation would be appreciated. www.kellyfh.ca
