Magnus was born in Ledwyn and grew up in a big loving farm family. He spent his early years working on the farm and attended Tarno School. He worked as a dragline oiler and in a grain elevator before buying a farm in 1951. Magnus married Marjory Cheyne of Teulon in 1952. They farmed together near Riverton for over 50 years, expanding their farm acreage and cattle herd, the last 25 years with his son Tim. He operated a sawmill, worked as a crop adjustor for Manitoba Crop Insurance and served on the Manitoba Beef Commission at various times while farming. Magnus' home was a meeting place where everyone was welcome. He enjoyed family times, wrestling with his grandchildren, story telling, reading and a good debate. He loved a good laugh above all else and in recent years looked forward to his coffee shop visits. He was active in community affairs, serving on local boards like the Riverton Pool Elevator, Riverton Co-op, Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church and he served as a school trustee in Evergreen School Division for 20 years, several as Chairperson. Magnus' family thanks Dr. Montoedi, nurses and staff at Gimli Community Heath Centre for their care and compassion over the last two months. A celebration of Magnus' life will be held on Wednesday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverton Community Hall, Pastor Trudy Thorarinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, in care of arrangements.
