MELVIN WILLIAM MALCHUK Peacefully, on Sunday, May 1, 2005, Mel Malchuk passed away at St. Boniface Hospital. Mel will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Kim; son Maury, daughter-in-law Audrey and his precious granddaughter Gillian Rose, father Bill and brother Wayne of Vancouver. Mel is also survived by many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Mel was predeceased by his loving mother Rose on August 24, 2000. Mel was born in Shoal Lake on September 27, 1951 and moved to the big city of Winnipeg in 1958 and grew up in the North End, married and had his son Maury in 1969. Mel became a letter carrier for Canada Post in 1972 and carried that bag for 28 years. Sports and the outdoors were a passion for Mel. After a number of knee operations, he decided to quit playing and focus on becoming an umpire. He soon became a highly respected umpire and was loved by many ball players around the city. In late 1999, Mel had met his future wife Kim and over the years took the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world in the winter months, and then jump in the camper and head to the Whiteshell in the summer months. In March 2001, Mel's only grandchild was born - Gillian Rose. To say that this child meant everything to him would be an understatement. Kim would like to extend her gratitude to the remarkable staff of the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit and doctors, Ralph Wong and Garnett Crawford. A special thank you to Kathy Kyryluk and Linda McKellar for allowing me to lean on you when I needed to. To all our family and friends who came to visit Mel, we constantly felt your love. Words cannot even begin to thank my employer, Ceridian Canada, for their overwhelming generosity and understanding during this very difficult time in both of our lives. Friends and family wishing to view and pay their last respects will be given the opportunity to do so from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the service celebrating Mel's life starting promptly at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. on Thursday, May 5 with cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made in Mel's memory to the Rainbow Society for Children. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel. Go my love and walk with the angels. • The privilege of meeting Mel, and spending such a precious short time together, will be a lifelong memory that I will always cherish. His magnificent smile and quiet demeanour was a subtle sign that he was a giant of a man. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. Sincerest condolences to his wonderful wife Kim and his great and loyal family. Allan - Posted by: Allan Waxman (Family) on: May 04, 2005
