AVA SMIEL (nee WALLNER) On Sunday, May 1, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with cancer, our darling Ava passed away peacefully. Ava was a wife (husband Dave), mother (daughter Susan and partner Rafael), seamstress extraordinaire, artist, choreographer and a true individual. After the Second World War, Ava and Dave immigrated to Canada. She started her career as a seamstress, became a sales lady at La Boutique and in her 40's, decided to fulfill her dreams of being a nurse by becoming an LPN. Ava was fiercely independent and always believed that women could do anything they set their mind to. Mom had many talents. She painted and drew and was a gifted seamstress. Ava sewed everything from clothing, to costumes, to dolls and teddy bears. Mom loved kids and animals and was always surrounded by both. She was the woman who organized the kids in the neighbourhood to put on a show . Mom would make the costumes, scenery, do the choreography and teach us all the words to the show tunes. Her short versions of My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, South Pacific and Swan Lake were really quite brilliant. She faced adversity with courage and determination and her battle with cancer was well fought. We love you and miss you darling. In accordance with Ava's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A celebration of Ava's life will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 531 Arlington St. Please join our family to celebrate and honor Ava's life.
