Fleurette was a lifelong dancer starting at age 2. She began teaching dance at age 13 and continued teaching until the mid 1990's. She performed professionally and was well known in Winnipeg and Toronto. She trained under Tap greats Bill Robinson, Fred and Gene Kelly, Ernie Flatt among many many others. She was admired and respected by all for her clean clear technique, She met her husband Herman through dance and they were adagio partners entertaining in supperclubs for many years. Fleurette danced to entertain troops during the war effort and eventually moved from Winnipeg to Toronto and opened Fleurette School of Dance at the former Westwood Theatre location. She was national representative for the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters and a lifelong member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. She taught Tap, Jazz, Ballet and Acro to thousands of dancers over the years and was well known and respected in the dance community. Although she would not admit it Tap was her specialty and she taught Classical Tap technique and created beautiful well rounded dancers with a strong sense of musicality and clean clear technique. She was my mentor and I was her last student who went on to teaching... She was always a class act and did not stand for any sloppy dancing or monkey business. We all learned quickly not to cross her! I count her as family and constantly keep her memory alive by teaching my students combinations she taught me and by passing on her stories in dance. She was one of a kind and we all loved her very much. - Posted by: Valerie McNellen (dance student/ mentee) on: Nov 12, 2020
