VICTOR (BRUCE) GILLIS Peacefully at 3:00 a.m. on April 29, 2005 Bruce passed away at Victoria General Hospital. He was predeceased by his brother Charlie; sister Louise; and brothers-in-law, Edward, Bob and Ted. Bruce was born in 1926 in Winnipeg. After graduation from St. John's in 1944, he proceeded to work in the family quarry business fulltime, this led to his involvement with various Builder and Masonry Associations, until his retirement in 1996. Bruce's interests included golf at Breezy Bend; curling at the Granite C.C., West Winnipeg Rotary, Ancient Landmark Lodge and Winnipeg Shriner's Khartoum Temple, he was also a Life Member of the St. Andrews Society. Bruce was highly active in his children and grandchildren's lives, known not only for his chauffeuring to sporting and musical events but also for his good cheer and corny jokes. In arms reach, there would always be a good book and the daily crossword puzzle. Bruce enjoyed many summers at the lake and was known for his daily paper run to the Rockeries where whoever accompanied him got a treat. Bruce was a dedicated Visitor for Westminster for many years and a balcony sitter. Bruce will be sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Joan; daughter Barbara (Tim, Caitlyn, James, Andrew), son Douglas (Diane, Kara, Heather), daughter Donna (Harry, Virginia, Wendy, Raymond and friend Mia), son Keith (Christine, Webb, MacPherson, Finlay); sisters, Kay Brown, Margaret Yaxley and Adair Bickell (Ivan); and brother Frank (Louise); sister-in-law Daisy Gillis; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating Bruce's life will be held on Tuesday, May 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Westminster United Church, Westminster and Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital Research Foundation.
