PETER SHYMKO On Friday, May 6th, 2005 at the Betel Home in Gimli, Peter passed away peacefully at the age of 91 years. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary; children, Tom (Sally), Walter (Elaine), Nick (June), Caroline (Jerry Hurak) and Darlene Cherniak; grandchildren, Sheri, Tammy, Tracy, Brent, Blair, Mark, Nadine, Laressa, Amy and Kelly; great-grandchildren, Emily, Samantha, Bethany and Adam; brother John (Martha) and sister-in-law Jean. He was predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Julia, his brother Walter and son-in-law Craig Cherniak. He was born in 1913 in the Ukraine and immigrated to Canada with his parents as a young boy. He settled in Silver, MB where he and his wife Mary farmed for 31 years. He was an active member of the St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church and also in the community. In 1973, Peter and Mary moved to Gimli. He became an active member of the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, assisting with cantoring and served as an elder. Peter was an avid hunter and in his retirement years, he received great enjoyment from playing cards with friends, gardening and carpet bowling. His favorite saying was don't you worry. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gimli with a viewing 1/2 hour prior to Mass with Father Peter Chorney officiating and Deacon Harry Chuckry assisting. Following the lunch in the Church hall, interment will take place at the St. John Cemetery in Silver, MB. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Wayne and Curtis Shymko, Gordon Rawluk, Gerry Pidborchynski, Walter Kosteck and grandson, Brent Shymko. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. R.C. Patel and the staff at the Gimli Community Health Center and the Betel Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sacred Heart Church in Gimli or the GCHC Building Fund. This is a journey we all must take and each must go alone. It's part of the master plan A step on the road to home. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
