THERESA GRAY (nee SCHMIDT) 1926 - 2005 Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, it is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Maria Theresa Gray, beloved wife and soulmate of Jim. Theresa passed away on the day before Mother's Day, Saturday, May 7, 2005, at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg, with her daughter Linda at her side. She left us to be with her mother Mary. Remaining to cherish her memory are Jim Gray, her spouse of 57 years; daughter Linda Buechler (Garry); son Bill (Lori); grandchildren, Chris, Kyle and Steve; brother Frank Schmidt; sister Hedy Chambers; close cousin Marie Karch of Markham, ON; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Frank Schmidt; and infant brother Joseph. Born in Yugoslavia in 1926, Theresa came to Winnipeg with her parents at the age of one, where she resided for the rest of her 79 years. On June 14, 1947 she married her soulmate Jim. Together they raised their family, sharing wonderful times and building many happy memories. During this time, Theresa spent many years singing in the choir at Harstone Memorial United Church and she cherished the memories she had of friends and time spent there. After Jim's retirement, she joined him at MTS Telephone Pioneers where she spent countless hours volunteering and tying ribbons on teddy bears for children. Bowling also was a highlight both before and during her retirement years, although the scores weren't always the main purpose for being there. Along with their friends, Theresa and Jim enjoyed many Saturday night card games and trips to Florida, Hawaii, the southern States, eastern Canada, Alaska and Germany. Over the last 30 years, many enjoyable hours were spent at the cottage at Lester Beach. Whether visiting with friends, celebrating birthdays with family or simply watching the birds and the squirrels, she looked forward to the summer and loved the time she spent there. A loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Theresa found friends wherever she travelled. A celebration of Theresa's life will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr. with Rev. Bill Corkum officiating. A private family interment will take place at the Thomson In The Park Cemetery at a later date. Our family would like to thank Dr. Harris and the wonderful staff of the Grace General Hospital Oncology Unit; as well as Dr. Borrett and the wonderful staff on the 3rd floor of Grace General Hospital for their compassionate care and concern. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Theresa's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. A true champion as a mother and role model as a wife she will be missed. After 24 years battling this terrible disease she will always be a survivor to me and I know she has gone to a better place. Thanks, all my love, Bill - Posted by: Bill Gray (Family) on: May 10, 2005
