Date of Passing: May 09, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY ELSIE BROWN (STEWART) On Monday, May 9, 2005 at Golden West Centennial Lodge, shortly after her 90th birthday, Mary left us to be with her husband Stan who predeceased her in 1997. Mom will be sadly missed by her children, Jerry (Marylyn), grandchildren, Darren (Leslie) and Laurie (Dave), great-granddaughter Kyla Cross; Rhoda Mandzuik (Tony), grandchildren, Ken, Kelli (Jose), Andy (Jasmine), great-grandson Mauricio; Dave, grandchildren, Becky, Reid, Jessie and Gibson; Ian (Barb), grandchildren, Jason (Kim) and Mike, great-grandchildren, Joshua and Taylor. Also left to mourn are Mom's identical twin sister Agnes Hourd; sisters, Nell Istace, Rhoda Stewart and brother Donald Stewart and wife Doris; brother-in-law Gilbert Brown and wife Dorothy; sister-in-law Edith Brown and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband Stan; son Victor Stanley (in infancy) and her parents Robert and Davina. Mom was born on April 28, 1915 in Beulah, MB and lived her entire life in Manitoba. Mom and Dad were married on May 17, 1941, just before Dad headed for Europe and the Second World War. Mary spent 20 years working for S.S. Kresge at Polo Park near their St. James home. Mom was an avid member of the Deer Lodge Ladies Curling Club, the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #4, The Legion Sunday Curling League and The Legion Over 60 Club. Mom's real treasures were her husband Stan and her family. Mom was the one who always listened. She always cared and she always gave of herself. There was no more loving, warmer or caring mother. The first thing we all learned from her was that we were loved. We all spent many summers at Kenosee Lake in Saskatchewan where Mom's favourite pastime was playing golf with her best and closest friend, her twin sister Agnes. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Mom's wishes a family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge especially the second floor, for their kindness and compassion during Mom's years in their care. See you later Mom. Well said Darren. I think that is still my dad's favorite thing about birthdays, is if there is money in the cake. I remember anytime I visited, I could eat as much apple pie (homemade of course) and Coca-cola as I wanted. First time I swore in front of a family member? Yup, in grandma's kitchen after she encouraged me to do it. Love you grandma. - Posted by: Mike (Grandson) on: Dec 03, 2018

As grandchildren we couldn't wait to celebrate our birthday at Grandma and Grandpa's. The highlight? Birthday cake with MONEY IN IT!! Cold hard cash (nickels, dimes, and the illustrious quarter or two!) wrapped in wax paper and baked in! Birthdays were even more exciting for those who weren't celebrating as there was a chance to get more money than the birthday boy/girl! I should have visited more, and if you still have the opportunity to visit your grandparent(s), take it. They are the glue in most families, and an invaluable link in the story of your life. Forever loving you Grandma. - Posted by: Darren (Family) on: May 11, 2005
