MURIEL RAMONA MCVEIGH May 2, 1928 - May 6, 2005 After a five year struggle with cancer, Muriel passed away on May 6, 2005 in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Boniface Hospital. Muriel was predeceased by her twin, Murray James, who died in infancy and her mother and father, Victoria and Arnold McVeigh. She is survived by her brother George Barry (Lorna) McVeigh; her sister Betty (Steve) Tuba; her nieces, Cathryn McVeigh Brisard, Colleen (Richard) Keller; and her nephews, Cameron (Shelley) McVeigh, Michael (Linda) Tuba, Patrick Tuba and Barry Tuba. She is also mourned by her longtime friend Joan Irvine, Joan's family and many, many friends. Muriel was born in Antler, SK where she attended elementary school. Later she attended schools in Kenora, Fort William and finished high school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. Muriel graduated from the Normal School in 1947 where she won the Gold Medal for Women's Physical Education. Her first teaching position was in Thornhill, MB. Then she joined the staff of Winnipeg School Division No. 1 where she taught Junior High School at Hugh John MacDonald, Earl Grey, Churchill High School and Sargent Park. Muriel was always interested in sports. She curled with the Valour Road Teachers and the Crocus Club for many years. She was also a member of the Pine Ridge Golf Club for a short time. As a child, Muriel spent her summers in Kenora with her Auntie Maude and Uncle Nelson. There she learned to love the Lake of the Woods. More recently she enjoyed returning there to Cameron's condo at Clearwater Bay. Muriel also loved her own cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake where she spent many happy years entertaining relatives and friends. Muriel wishes to thank Dr. Maureen McConnell for her care and support over many years and for her advocacy for Muriel in the last five years. She was also very appreciative of all the staff associated with St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, both in the hospital and at home. Their loving support and care over the last seven months lessened the stress on Muriel immeasurably. A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. The Rev. Dr. Eleanor Geib presiding. Interment of ashes to take place at a later date in Antler, SK. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Muriel's memory are encouraged to the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit Foundation, 409 Tache Ave., Room D1003, Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or to a charity of your choice.
