Date of Passing: May 04, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD SYDNEY SMITH Donald Sydney Smith, husband, father, soldier, worker, civil servant, volunteer and friend, aged 73, of Brackendale, BC, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Don enjoyed exploration and the thrill of discovering new opportunities and activities throughout his life. Wanderlust led he and Mae to leave Winnipeg and take up residence in a number of different places including Toronto, Hamilton and Nipigon, ON. Don had a dream to live in BC and so in 1998 moved to Squamish, BC. In addition to residing in many of Canada's wonderful cities, Don and Mae travelled abroad on a number of occasions taking the opportunity to visit Germany, England, Scotland and France. Besides being a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren, Don touched many lives through his work on the Winnipeg Police Force, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the Nipigon-Red Rock School Board and countless volunteer activities within the communities within which he and Mae made their home. In his final years Don maintained an active and varied lifestyle through his involvement with the local Seniors group in its numerous clubs and activities and as the group treasurer. He will be missed by all those whom he has come into contact with. Don was a kind and giving person who would go out of his way to help anyone in need. While undergoing chemotherapy to treat his own illness, he continued to help other members of the senior's community by way of companionship, support and often transportation so that they would be able to make their various appointments right up to the week immediately preceding his passing. Don will be greatly missed by his companion in life, Mary Margaret (Mae), their three children, Jeffrey Donald, Glenn William and Janice-Mae Elizabeth; and their spouses, Muriel, Rosanna and Kevin. Don leaves behind a legacy of nine grandchildren, Meghan, Evan, Catherine, Brandon, Alyssa, Corey, Kristin, Mitchell and Brodie. Don also leaves behind his sister Eleanor Bailey, her husband Gordon, and many nieces and nephews. Tammy, his dog, continues to look for him. No funeral services will be held at Don's request; instead he asked that his remains be used as most appropriate in the further study of cancer prevention and development of a cure. Donations to cancer research would be appreciated. To sign the book of condolences, please click on squamishfuneralchapel.com
