ROCHELLE (SHELLEY) RUSEN On Monday, May 2, 2005, Shelley, beloved wife of Aubie, passed away at home surrounded by her family at the age of 65 years. Shelley will be sadly missed and forever remembered by her devoted husband of 46 years, Aubie; her children, Sara and Howie, Janis and Jeffrey and Marnie; her grandchildren, Benjamin, Hannah, Anna, Noah and Matthew; her mother Gertrude Stall; her siblings, Phyllis and Marvin Shenkarow and Richard Stall and Lisa Berger; and her many nieces and nephews. Shelley was predeceased by her brother Morton and her father Nathan Stall. Shelley grew up in Winnipeg and from an early age developed special friendships and a passion for art that would last her lifetime. Shelley and Aubie married in 1958 and had three daughters. In 1977, Shelley returned to the University of Manitoba to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Thereafter, she began her career as a visual artist in Winnipeg. In recent years, amongst other things, Shelley was proud to be an active member of Site Gallery. Besides her love for her family and her art, Shelley loved spending time with her friends, food and entertaining, jogging, knitting, travelling, reading and her cottage at Winnipeg Beach. She was always someone you could depend on for her high energy, devotion and perfectionism. Following her diagnosis of cancer in 2003, Shelley continued with her art and enjoyed nothing more than to spend time with her family and friends. She displayed remarkable courage, strength and humour, which helped those around her endure a most difficult time. Shelley was very fortunate to have had exceptional medical care and attention throughout her illness. The family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care she received at CancerCare Manitoba, under the expert guidance of Dr. David Eisenstat. We are also grateful for the care Shelley received from the staff on 3 West at Riverview Health Centre and from Dr. Jan Mulder and the community Palliative Care Program. Funeral services were held on May 4 at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Pallbearers were Howie Fogel, Benjamin Fogel, Jeffrey Wassermann, Marvin Shenkarow, Morris Shenkarow, Jeffrey Brown and Jack Rusen. Honourary pallbearers were Robert and Irene Corne and Gail and Ted Hechter. If friends so desire, donations in Shelley's name may be made to CancerCare Manitoba (for Brain Tumour Research), 675 McDermot Ave.

  • We were shocked and deeply sorrowed to hear of Shelley's death. I remember her from an early age - her sweetness and shyness and just basic decency. Our deepest condolences to the family, and a special word of condolence to Gertie Stall whom we have known for over 60 years. May you all be spared further sorrow - Posted by: Barry & Bebe Posner (Friend) on: May 21, 2005
