CANON GRANT BRADSHAW HYSLOP B.A., B.ED. December 7, 1936 - May 14, 2005 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. - 2 Timothy 4:2 Encircled by his family and friends, with courage and dignity, Grant finished his course on May 14, 2005 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Kenora. Although small in stature, Grant was a giant in his capacity to share his love. He welcomed friends and acquaintances into the family home, young and old alike. He shared with his wife Linda, the raising of their four children, encouraged her when she began to work with children in the community, was proud of her and loved her dearly. It has been said that the greatest gift a man can give his children is to love their mother. A graduate of the St. John's College, the University of Manitoba, he began his teaching career at Glenlawn Collegiate in 1962, returning home to Kenora in 1965 as Head of the Mathematics Department at Beaver Brae Secondary School. Appointed Vice Principal in 1971 he remained in that position until his retirement in 1994. A lifelong Anglican, Grant served his church in many capacities at the parish, provincial, and national level. In 2000, he was collated Lay Canon by Bishop Gordon Beardy in recognition for his dedicated service. Grant is survived and will be sorely missed by the love of his life, Linda (Vale), his wife of 44 years, his cherished children, Jennifer (Barry Smith), Janet (Steve Mastromatteo), Ian (Sarah Misurka), Laird (Lisa Olson); his adored grandchildren, Brandon Smith, Gabriel and Emilia Mastromatteo, and John and Ewan Hyslop. Grant was so looking forward to the birth of grand twins due in August. Predeceased by his father John, he is also survived by his mother Vera Hyslop McHardy and her husband Donald McHardy of Winnipeg and a sister Barbara West (Brian) of Edmonton. Grant will be fondly remembered by Linda's brother Richard Vale (Bunnie) of England and sister Barbara Canning (Ken) of Cochrane, AB, and all the nieces and nephews to whom Grant was a special uncle. A gentle man, Grant was happiest at his home on Louise Lake, surrounded by the happy noise of family and pets. He delighted in sharing a meal and a wee dram with family and friends. A celebration of Grant's life will take place at St. Alban's Cathedral, Kenora on Wednesday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a wake at Kenora Golf and Country Club. If friends so desire, the family ask that tributes to his memory be directed to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital Palliative Care Program, Northern Cancer Research Foundation or a charity of choice. Flowers are gratefully declined. A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell when his influence stops. - Henry Adams On Line Condolences may be made at kcfh@voyageur.ca Subject: Grant Hyslop Kenora Community Funeral Home 807-547-6000
