WALTER CHARLES (CHIKOUSKY) On Wednesday, May 18, 2005, Walter Charles passed away suddenly at home, after a struggle with cancer, at the age of 84. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Maxime and Anastasia, brothers Bill and George and sister Helen. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 57 years, Florentine (Laurie); daughter Shirley (Rick) Kazubek, grandson Trevor and granddaughter Ainsley; son Doug (Susan) of Langley, BC; son Richard (Cathy), granddaughters Johanna and Erin; brother Roy (Lorraine); sister Violet; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Walter was born on April 4, 1921 in Camper, MB. He attended school and worked on the family farm in Camper until he enlisted in the Army Service Corps in June 1941. He served overseas in Britain, Holland and Belgium and was discharged in October 1945. Walter and Laurie were married in 1947 and lived and raised their family in the North End. He was employed with Winnipeg Transit for 29 years, retiring in 1986. After retirement, Walter and Laurie enjoyed several years of wintering in Sun City, Arizona, where they made many friends through bowling, card playing and trips to Vegas and other gambling spots. Walter also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and trips to the steam baths with good friends Frank, Mitch, Mike and Jack over many years. Walter was an active member of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral and served as Treasurer, as well as being a reader for many years. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 141. The family's heartfelt thanks are extended to Drs. J. Lezack and A. Cooke for their care and compassion during Walter's illness. Prayers will be said on Monday, May 23, at 8:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Chapel, officiated by Rev. Fr. Robert Kennaugh and Very Rev. Fr. Anatoly Melnyk. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made in Walter's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
