FREDA (FRITZIE) DRIBEN (nee HIRSCH) Freda (Fritzie) Driben (nee Hirsch) passed away in Winnipeg on Friday, May 20, 2005 at the age of 85. Freda made a life of wonderful, exciting memories for all who knew her. Born in Winnipeg, she grew up in Kamsack, SK, with friends and family close at hand, making up a most important part of her life. She truly enjoyed celebrating all of the Jewish holidays at her grandparents' home. After Freda moved to Winnipeg with her family at the beginning of the Great Depression, she began a remarkable baseball career. During the 1940s and early 1950s Freda and her teammates enjoyed a string of championships that culminated in her induction into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame at a moving ceremony in Portage la Prairie, MB in 2003. During her 44 year marriage to Harry, they raised two happy and successful children. She was extremely proud of her children, Paul, a university professor and the author of five books, and her daughter, Enid, a social worker. After Freda had retired, she truly loved visiting Israel, seeing the country and the people, and having her family visit in Florida and Gimli, MB. Freda was predeceased by her husband Harry, daughter Enid Triller, brother Sid Hirsch, and sister Mildred Broudy. She leaves behind her sister Fanny, brother Norman, son Paul (Carol), granddaughters, Bonnie Frost, Lisa Driben (Steven Boardman), and Hilarie Triller; great-grandchildren, Doug (Leeha), Russell, Eve, and Quinn; and nieces and nephews. All of us will miss Fritzie deeply and cherish her memory. Her family would also like to thank the staff of the Sharon Home and the staff of the Seven Oaks General General Hospital, who provided her with the help she required during the last year of her life. A graveside service for Fritzie will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 23 at the Bnay Abraham Cemetery. Donations to The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba may be made in lieu of flowers.
