EARL HAINES 1915 - 2005 After a long and full life, peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2005 Earl Haines passed away at the Concordia General Hospital with his daughter Donna and son-in-law Ted by his side. Earl leaves to mourn his daughter Donna, son-in-law Ted, grandsons, Darren and Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Arian, Keana and Tayler. He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy (Venables) and Audrey (Bud) Daniels. He was predeceased by his wife Bertha in 1992 and his siblings, Wilfred Haine, Carl Haine, Alma Houston and Elsie Schick. Earl was born on February 6, 1915 in Winnipeg. He married Bertha in 1936 and they settled in Winnipeg's North End for many years until finally moving north of the city to build on a large, lovely property that he and his daughter's family each had a home on. As a young man Earl excelled in the sport of baseball. He played for the Maroons for many years. He was a star pitcher and received numerous accolades and trophies during his years on the field. As a carpenter by trade, Earl built many of the homes that are still seen in the North End/Garden City community. Earl would point out the homes he constructed as he drove through the area - knowing the details of each one as if he'd built it yesterday. Earl loved to be out in his shop working on one project or another and he will always be remembered for the fine craftsmanship that he showed in all of his work. Earl always put all that he could into each handmade piece. Family and friends are proud to display his pieces of work in their homes - whether it be a set of tv tables or a beautiful curio cabinet. His eldest grandson Darren was fortunate enough to be able to work along side his Grampa and learn some of the trade - times spent together that will never be forgotten. When spring came each year, Earl would pick out the various flowers that he wanted to see in the yard and then he would direct his youngest grandson Ryan as to where he wanted them planted. He loved to have a beautiful yard to look at - and son-in-law Ted worked hard to keep it that way. Although Earl lived by himself until the past couple of years when Ryan moved in, he was never alone. Suppers were always at Donna and Ted's and lunch for the next day was ready on his take-out plate as he headed home across the yard, past the pump-house. During the days when he wasn't busy in the shop, he could be found in his favourite chair watching a sporting event on tv or reading a sports book that Darren picked up for him to enjoy. When weather permitted, Earl would sit out on his back patio and enjoy the sights and sounds of the many birds coming and going to his feeders in the back yard. People always knew where to find Earl - and there was never a shortage of people stopping by to say hello and enjoy some of the desserts that he always had in the house. The great-grandchildren especially loved going over to Big Grampa's for a sneak peek in the chocolate bar drawer. Earl will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by his immediate family, numerous extended family members and his many, many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in Earl's memory can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. A special thank you to Dr. Darcy Johnson and the staff at Concordia General Hospital - N1 South. A celebration of Earl's life will be on Wednesday, May 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Dad, I will forever miss you and always treasure the times that we had together.
