ALEX KALYNUIK It is with profound sadness that the family of Alex Kalynuik, announces his passing on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at the Grace General Hospital, at the age of 74 years. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory; his wife, Mildred; son Ernie (Carla); three grandchildren, Cailee, Stefan and Jared; two brothers, Danny (Stella) and Ed (Shirley); three sisters, Annette, Anne and Adele (Hermann); brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; as well as, nephews, nieces and special friends. Alex was predeceased by his parents Bill and Katie; and sisters Elsie and Evangeline. Alex was born March 17, 1931, in Birdtail, MB and attended Valley School while assisting his parents with farming. He left the family homestead in 1951 and moved to Winnipeg. Alex was a handyman and landed a job with Dominion Bridge, where he remained for 29 years. He was a hard worker and soon became recognized for his ironwork skills and talents. Alex was one of the unique ironworkers who learned on the job and became a site foreman. He supervised the construction of many bridges, churches, schools and office buildings. His last thirteen working years were with Abesco. A proud ironworker of 42 years, he retired in 1992. In 1952, Alex and Mildred were married. They purchased their first home on Toronto Street. In 1963, they built a new home on Ronald Street in the St. James area. Alex built a large garage and carpentry shop to accommodate his hobbies. He spent many hours designing and building items to use around the home or as gifts for other people. Whenever, someone needed something redesigned or built, Alex was there to help. All the nephews soon learned that if they were stuck with a project or needed tools, they would visit Uncle Alex . Along with his building hobbies, Alex loved gardening, playing cards, bowling, dancing and listening to old time music. He loved to entertain relatives and friends; their home was always opened for a game of cards and plenty of game conversation. Alex was very proud of his grandchildren. He always attended their hockey, football and all other events in which they participated. Alex enjoyed having them over for family gatherings or just to share a lunch and conversation during the week. An active member of St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Alex helped with maintenance and fund raising. He was a member of the St. James Senior Bowling League and the Dufferin Senior Centre. Alex enjoyed dancing and socializing with many of their senior friends. Prayers will be sung on Sunday evening, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St., Winnipeg, MB.
