Henry was born February 10, 1915 in Austin, MB, to Harry and Ruth Phelps. Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret; daughters, Ruth Teichrib (Gerald), Beverley Hindle (John); brother Jack Phelps (Gwen); grandchildren, Christine Gardiner (Colin) and Colleen Marie Helgason, Allyson Hindle and D'Alton Hindle; great-grandchildren, Leah Marie Kirkup and Max Roland Gardiner. Sisters-in-law, Adair Phelps and Deleen Gruntman and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Henry was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Mary, Esther and Maudie; and his brothers, Joe, Charlie and Lloyd. Henry lived his life with compassion for others and never gave up on the goodness in people. He was well gifted with musical talent and played many musical instruments, the fiddle being his favourite. The death of Henry's mother when he was 12 forced the family to be scattered and a newborn brother had to be adopted out. Henry and his brothers wound up in the Knowles School for boys where they were well cared for. In later years, Henry completed his education at night while serving on the staff of the Knowles School. A lifelong search by brother Charlie for the baby brother ended 65 years later when Lloyd was found. Henry met the love of his life Margaret in 1940, they married in 1945 just as the Second World War ended. They lived in Charleswood where Henry worked hard at his chosen trade, refrigeration and air-conditioning. He served in many capacities at Charleswood United Church and loved teaching Sunday School. Henry was an associate member of the Charleswood and Arborg Legions. He was a dedicated volunteer wherever needed and an advocate against injustice. He was often found lending a hand to anyone who needed help and was dedicated to visiting the sick. Henry was a lifetime member and volunteer at Evergreen Basic Needs in Gimli. Uncle Henry was loved by the children in the family because of his imaginative storytelling. Henry and Margaret retired to Arnes, MB, in 1981 where many happy years were spent playing golf, cards and darts with brothers, sisters-in-law, family and friends. You fought hard to the end, now we are so very proud to celebrate your life. Funeral services will be held at Gimli Lutheran Church, 50 Third Ave., on Monday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in support of mental health awareness, to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 432 Ellice Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1Y4, phone 982-6100.
