I worked with Ian at the MLCC many years ago. Ian was a bright guy, as well as dedicated, physically strong, and hard working. In a group of younger employees, not always focused on work, Ian was a father figure, steady and constant. I spent a lot of time talking to him, picking his brain and enjoying his company. I was in a spot of bother financially at one point and asked Ian if I coud borrow some money, $200, not a small amount at the time. Without hesitation, Ian gave me the money with no demand as to when I had to pay him back. I fully planned to do so as quickly as possible. For awhile, I could never seem to get ahead and time passed. Too much time. I moved around and lost touch with Ian, but I never stopped thinking about what I owed him. When I was in a better situation financially, I tried, probably not as hard as I should have, to track Ian down. I never did. My debt to Ian was the only one in my life that I never repaid. After all these years, I still think about it. Today, I went about seeing if I could discover anything about Ian. Unfortunately, though I probably knew, I found his obituary notice. Though it is too late, for Ian and for me, I wanted to honour the person he was. I have donated the amount I owed him to the Manitoba Alzheimer Society in a pale attempt to do something that might have pleased him, kind and generous man that he was. - Posted by: Rob Jones (Colleague) on: Mar 19, 2021
