OLIVE JEAN SMITHSON (nee MCINTOSH) April 2, 1927 - June 1, 2005 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Olive, who passed away on June 1, 2005, at the Grace Hospice after a courageous and lengthy illness. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Don (Norma Jean), grandson Phillip, Bruce (Corrine), grandchildren, Chad and Alexa; daughter Diane (Karl Stenberg), grandson Gordon; daughter-in-law Betty Smithson, grandchildren, Jennifer and Chris. She was predeceased by her husband Ted of 54 years on March 17, 2003; son Kenneth on January 20, 1999; brother Cameron; and her parents, Edgar and Elizabeth. She is survived by her brother Donald (Laura); sisters, Evelyn (Mike Osadchuk), Helen (Vic Kaspick); and many nieces and nephews. Olive was born in Strathclair, MB on April 2, 1927, and raised in Birnie, MB. She spent her earlier years on the farm until moving to the city and landing her first job at the Canadian Wheat Board. She married Ted on August 27, 1949 and they moved to Eden, MB until 1955. From there they moved back to Winnipeg and built a life for themselves in the North end where they raised their four children. Olive worked at Misericordia Hospital as a clerk typist until her retirement in 1975. She had many hobbies. She loved knitting, cake decorating, ceramics, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She was an active member of the Legion. She enjoyed curling for many years and endless hockey games with her son Bruce, through these activities she made a lot of friends. But her one passion was spending time with her family. She loved camping and playing cards with her grandchildren, they meant the world to her. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment will follow at the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all the staff of the Grace Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion. You suffered in silence and never complained, always caring of others taking on your courageous battle in stride one day at a time. Your spirit and desire for life was an inspiration to all as we watched you fight to the very end. You will never be forgotten in our loving memories.
