DUNCAN ANDREW MCKENZIE Duncan McKenzie was born in Minnedosa, MB July 3, 1916. Early life was on the family farm some nine miles to the south-west. Duncan was devoted to the agricultural way of life as an ongoing pursuit. Early in the 1930s there was a drought, the Great Depression and successive crop failures. This altered his plans and higher education became his aspiration. In 1936 he enrolled in United College (now the University of Winnipeg). A marriage to Edna Tully was in 1940 and they raised two children David Barry and Jeannie Merle. In 1940 Duncan enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and after completion of aircrew training, postings followed both to the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. These coastal command duties as a navigator wireless operator were terminated in September, 1946 having obtained a commission and two tours of operation. Duncan resumed his education and obtained a BA degree in 1946. Subsequently there were two years of post-graduate study in social work, one at the University of Manitoba and one in McGill. Following employment in social work practice was for a short period with the Family Bureau and for some 35 years in the Public Service in Deer Lodge Hospital. In 1987 his wife Edna died and in 1997 he married Barbara Dickson. Duncan was always an ardent sports fan including golf and curling. He was a life member of Deer Lodge Curling Club. Duncan was predeceased by his loving daughter Dr. Jeannie McKenzie Pedlow in November, 2003. Surviving are his wife Barbara; son David (Carolyn); son-in-law George Pedlow; grandsons, Duncan and Diel McKenzie; grandson Mac Pedlow and granddaughters Meg and Bonnie Pedlow. All reside in the United States. According to his wishes, Duncan's body has been donated to the Health Sciences Centre who will work with the Penn State University on research in lung diseases. At Duncan's request, no service will be held. His cremated remains will be interred at a later date in the McKenzie plot in Rapid City MB Cemetery. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I would not have survived my childhood without the MacKenzie Clan, who by grace lived next door on Conway Street. My sadness is overwhelming at the loss of Jeannie and uncle Dunc. I have been searching for a very long time to get in touch with Barry or Carolyn. Please contact if possible. Thank you - Posted by: Janet Tucker.
