Peggy was born on May 23, 1926, in Caerphilly, District of Pontypridd, South Wales, UK. She met Ted after the War, and 10 years later immigrated to Canada in 1957, with her three sons. She lived most of her new life in Manitoba (Brandon and Winnipeg), keeping a cottage at Clear Lake. Keri was born in Winnipeg in 1964. Peggy worked for many years at the YWCA Women's Residence as residence manager, counselor and friend to many women and children who passed through there. She retired to the Nanaimo, BC waterfront in 1995. She was a lifelong follower of the comings and goings of the Barlows at No. 13, the Tanners at No. 1 and the Rovers Return on Coronation Street. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Eunice and Ted Jacobs of London, UK, brother Norman, her brother and sister-in-law Evan and Pat Evans of Nanaimo, BC. Peggy was courageous in the face of a difficult illness. With the support of a devoted husband, she was determined as always to make the best of life. Her family was her greatest pride. She defined the adage that a mother is not someone to lean on, but someone who makes leaning unnecessary. As one of her grandchildren said, With Grandma, you always knew that she loved you. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m.on July 6 at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1 Newcastle Ave., Nanaimo, BC. The Whitley family records a huge debt of gratitude to the wonderful staff at the palliative care facility at Nanaimo District Hospital.
