BERT SHUMILAK 1925 - 2005 After a lengthy battle with cancer, Bert Shumilak passed away at Selkirk General Hospital on June 15, 2005 at age 80 years. Bert was born February 24, 1925 in Sebright, MB (near Beausejour). He was one of 12 children born to Katherine (Szajewski) and Anton Shumilak. Mourning his loss are his wife Steffie; his four children, Kenneth (Melanie), Katherine (Nelson) Hoffman, Douglas (Lesley) and Lorraine (Rob) Coumont. He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, James, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Jeannine, Alex and Zachary; as well as his sisters, Kay, Carol, Bernice, Mary, Lee and Roz; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Paul, Anton, Joe, Agnes and Stanley. Bert lived in the Mayfield area north of Garson from a very young age, first on his parents' homestead, then settling with Steffie one mile away, where they raised their four children. First and foremost, he loved his family, his farm, and his community. Aside from his love of farming, Bert wore many hats: grader operator, school bus driver, and later in life, he and Steffie spent two years in Sudan with CIDA teaching Canadian farming methods to the Sudanese. He loved reading, playing cards and travelling, over the years visiting such places as Poland, Israel, Italy, Greece, Cuba, California and Florida. He attended college at the University of Brandon in his younger years, and will always be remembered and respected as the glue of this very large family. Special thanks to the caring doctors, nurses and staff at both the Selkirk General Hospital and Concordia Oncology, as well as his special Home Care nurse, Susan Norquay. Cremation has taken place at Bert's request. Prayers will be held at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Garson, MB on Friday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 530 Atlantic Ave., Beausejour, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

  • Hi Sophie, I'm very sorry to hear about Bert. You may not remember me (Stan Pirozek's daughter), but I took great comfort getting to know Bert a little bit after my dad passed away - he reminded me so much of him! My thoughts are with you and the family. Take Care. Jennifer. - Posted by: Jennifer Snow (Family) on: Jun 21, 2005

  • Dear Steffie and Lorraine My deepest sympathy to you at this time of sorrow. I will remember Bert, with always having a big smile on his face and his head held high showing great confidence in himself. He would recognize you for who you are, offer you wisdom and advice and what you choose to do with what he had to offer was up to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Brenda McBride (Friend) on: Jun 20, 2005
