MARY MATIATION Peacefully on Saturday June 25, 2005, at Riverview Health Centre, Mary Matiation passed away at the age of 95. Mary was predeceased by her husband Stephen; mother Irene and father Steve; sisters, Ann and Stephie and brother John. She was a very caring and giving person who will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Lecia (Bill) and son Leonard (Gail); grandchildren, Nicole (Pascal), Jodi (Ward), Stefan (Cathy), Bill (Linda), Mike (Glenda), Taras, Wendy (Dave) and great-grandchildren, Katya, Gavin, Raphael, Colten, Solana, Taza, Wakinya, Jaya, Elsa, Alecia, Oksana, Michael, Nicholas, Charlie, Anna, Katie, Sarah and Jenna. Also brother Peter and sisters, Rose and Mildred. Mary spent her childhood on a farm near Oakburn and attended the community school (King George). She continued her education at the Oakburn school from 1923 - 1927. In 1927, she attended Wesley College, now the University of Winnipeg, where she completed Grade 12 and the following year went to Winnipeg Normal School and obtained a teaching certificate. At the tender age of 19, Mary faced her first class of 55 students at Seech School. In subsequent years she taught at Flowers, Horod, King George and Oakburn. In July 1934 she married Steve Matiation and together they ventured into the General Store business in Oakburn which they operated for 21 years, followed by 17 years in the restaurant business in Clear Lake. Mary was a community oriented person. For many years she belonged to the Ukrainian Women's Association and in addition was very much involved in the cultural activities of the community. She enjoyed participating in concerts, plays and choirs. She retired to Winnipeg with her husband in 1973 where she was able to relax with her crafts, gardening and reading. But above all she loved to entertain her family and close friends. The funeral service will take place in Oakburn MB on Saturday, July 2 at 11:00 a.m. in the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. George Malik officiating. Thank you to the Riverview staff for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Oakburn MB (Restoration Fund) or to a charity of your choice.
