GERTIE SILVER (nee OLIN) With deep sadness the family announces the passing of Gertie Silver on June 28, 2005. Gertie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband Dave, of 59 years; her children, Ron (Rita), Barbara (Harry Jerome) and Carol; grandchildren, Norman (Heather), Shane (Mara), Michael (Yael), Jeffrey, Debra, Avi (Kelly), Marshall, and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Tyler, Mattie, and Naomi. Gertie is survived by her sister Mary (Ed Lazar). She will also be lovingly remembered by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous relatives and friends. Gertie was born on April 8, 1922 and grew up in Winnipeg's north end. She was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother and friend. She married Dave in 1946 upon his return from the service and they began life's journey together, always there for each other. She was the heart of her family and they meant everything to her. Her life was a monument to loyalty, hard work, support of the family and individual selflessness. We would like to thank the staff on Unit 3 North at the Victoria General Hospital for their compassion and thoughtfulness. Very special thanks to Dr. R. Hayward for his caring, dedication and his extraordinary relationship with her and her family. Funeral services were held at Congregation Etz Chayim with interment at Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Special thanks to Cantor Gerry Daien and Rabbi Balzer. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • With passing of Mrs. Silver these words came to mind. Her life was a monument to loyalty, hard word, support of the family and individual selflessness. Every time she visited me in the office or when I left her after a talk in the hospital. I felt better than I had before! Who was the doctor? Her or Me? What a marvelous gift she shared with us. Her presence will be felt in your home and mine. “A ship is safe in the harbour but that is not what ships are for”. She is making her way out of the harbour. - Posted by: Dr. Rowland J. • I am privileged to tell you a bit about my Baba on behalf of the grandchildren. When I think about Baba a word that comes to mind is wealthy. I’m not talking about material wealth but a wealth of friends, family, long life, health, and a husband, my Zaida, who adored her. My baba was, is and will always be very wealthy through the friends and my Zaida remembering her and the family continuing to grow. When I look at Zaida’s and Baba’s relationship, I saw 2 people who were always meant for each other. We will all miss you Baba. - Posted by: Shane Silver (Family) on: Aug 07, 2005
