FREDA (FIMI) GLESBY Freda (Fimi) Glesby, nee Fruma Ginsberg, was born in Winnipeg on November 18, 1920, and passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on June 15, 2005. The daughter of Russian immigrants, Fred and Zina Ginsberg, she was raised in the north end of Winnipeg where she attended Machray Elementary and St. John's High School. In 1940, Fimi and Bill were married. With their first-born child Zenith, the family moved to Portage la Prairie where they had two more children, a daughter Erla and a son Harley. Over time they became the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren. Since Bill's passing, Fimi took great pride and enjoyment in six great-grandchildren. Fimi dedicated considerable time, energy and resources to community service with passion and great pleasure. Amongst her favourite projects were the Glesby Kindergarten Complex in Israel and the William Glesby Centre in Portage. She delighted in cruises and trips abroad, golfed avidly, and enjoyed attending functions at the Asper Jewish Community Campus. In her latter years Fimi moved to the Portsmouth residence, where she took pleasure in receiving visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed playing Mahjong with her fellow residents. Those who knew her well considered Fimi a loving and gentle woman of patience, compassion and great dignity. After a difficult year of challenging illness, Fimi passed on both gracefully and peacefully, attended by her devoted children. She is sadly missed and will be lovingly remembered by her family and many friends. Fimi was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Bill; her parents, Fred and Zina Ginsberg; and her sister Eva Brownstone. Left to mourn are her children, Zen (Faye) Glesby; Erla Glesby (Ron Gorsline) and Harley (Karen) Glesby. Mourning their Baba are grandchildren, Francine (Brian Hodgson), Brent (Liz) and Marc (Molly) Glesby; Cory (Tracy), Jonas (Nicole) and Daryn Chernick; and Sara, Jessica and Mira Glesby. Fimi will be missed by her great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha, Ethan, Caleb, Riley and Chloe. Also left to mourn Fimi are her brother Sam (Violet) Burge, brother-in-law Charlie (Shirley) Glesby, sister-in-law Betty (Ben) Sisman, brother-in-law Bert (Sylvia) Glesby, and many cousins and friends both far and near. Funeral services were held on June 16, 2005, at the Etz Chayim (Rosh Pina) Synagogue, in Winnipeg. Rabbi Balzer officiated while Jonas Chernick delivered his grandmother's eulogy. Interment followed at the Etz Chayim Cemetery. Pallbearers Charlie, Brent and Marc Glesby, and Cory, Jonas and Daryn Chernick were accompanied by honorary pallbearers Sara Glesby and Ron Gorsline. Thanks to the staff at Grace Hospital; to Fimi's superb care givers - Esther, Flo, Rosita, Sally and Yolita; and special thanks to Fimi's angel Emma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to the Fimi Glesby Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.
