JOAN PATRICIA FINLAYSON (ASELTINE) It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the death of Joan Patricia Finlayson on July 8, 2005. Joan was predeceased by her husband Russel Finlayson in 2001 and her brother Murray in 1985. She is survived by son Patrick and brother Terry (Diane) and niece Lauren and nephew Paul, as well as sister-in-law Ruth Finlayson of Hemingford, Quebec, and step-sons Ian and Gordon Finlayson of Toronto, and many cousins throughout Canada, the United States and Australia. Joan was born in Winnipeg, only daughter to Ken and Irene Aseltine (Ketcheson). She attended school at St. Ignatius and St. Mary's Academy. She was a parishioner at St. Ignatius Church throughout her life. She resided in the family home in Wildwood Park until two months before here death. During her working life, Joan held administrative/secretarial positions at various organizations including the Winnipeg Tribune and most recently the Health Sciences Psychiatric Health Centre. Joan was a long-time member of the Wildwood Club where she was active as both a golfer and curler and served in various capacities on the golf and curling committees. In the 1960's Joan became an accomplished water-skier with the Wildwood Ski Gulls. Along with friend and Canadian champion Terry Mordue, they choreographed many precision routines and performed water-ski shows on the Red River and throughout the province. In 1973, Joan married Russel Finlayson. They enjoyed 28 years of happy life together until Russ's death from heart failure in 2001. During their marriage, they enjoyed trips to Hawaii, California, Quebec, and an Alaskan Cruise. One of her most enjoyable passions was time spent at the lake with family and friends. Each summer they spent several weeks at the family cottage enjoying the sun and water. Joan was a natural swimmer and could stay forever in the water without tiring. Joan had a very positive outlook on life and enjoyed the company of others and was a marvellous hostess to family and friends both at home and at the cottage. She had a wide variety of interests from books, to movies. Sports and current affairs. She enjoyed the company of, and following the activities of her niece Lauren and nephew Paul. Even under the pain and discomfort of dealing with her cancer over the last two years, Joan remained indefatigably positive in outlook and demeanour. She would have wanted to thank Dr. Marianne Krahn, Oncologist, and her nurse Heather and the many clinical nurses, aides and volunteers in oncology; St. Boniface Hospital staff, particularly the Palliative Care Unit for their care and support. Special thanks also to home care nurses and aides, particularly Bev. and Janice for their special caring manner and Dr. Jan Mulder for her support and consultation. In her memory, friends and family may provide donations to CancerCare Manitoba. A Mass to celebrate Joan's life will be held at St. Ignatius Church on Thursday, July 14, at 12:30 p.m. THOMSON IN THE PARK FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 McGillivray Blvd 925-1120
