Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySISTER MAUREEN CURRIE, R.S.C.J. Sister Maureen Currie, R.S.C.J., died in Halifax, NS on Thursday, July 7, 2005. Sister Maureen was born on July 16, l932 in Winnipeg, MB. For most of her school years, she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart (grades 5 to 11) in Winnipeg and graduated in 1949. She went to St. Mary's Academy, Winnipeg, for business college and first year university, after which she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart, September 8, l951, in Albany, NY and made her first vows on May 5, 1954. She remained at Kenwood, Albany, for another year of preparation for teaching. Between 1955 and l969, Sister Maureen taught at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in various cities, Halifax, Montreal and Winnipeg. From 1960 to 1962, she studied at Newton College of the Sacred Heart, Boston, MA (BA with major in Theology) and at St. Joseph Teacher's College, Montreal, where she received her BEd. from the University of Montreal. Her much loved work of formation, spiritual direction and retreats began in the late 1970s and peaked throughout her stay in Winnipeg, from 1989 to 2000. Due to ill health, she then moved to Halifax where the loving care was provided by her community including the wonderful nursing staff and by palliative care. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Eileen Margaret (Bradshaw-Fullard) and Claude Francis Currie; two of her brothers, Msgr. John Currie, Priest of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, Robert of Salt Spring Island, BC; cousins, Bill Sturley and Bruce Langer. She is survived by her many sisters in the Religious of the Sacred Heart; by one brother Raymond (Charlene) and their children, Vincent and Catherine, of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Irene Currie and children, Raymond (Jan), Andrea and Rob (Peggy); close cousins, Sheila Sturley, Esme Peterkin (John) and their children, Katherine Andrews (Merv) and their children, Connie Ferwerda (Jim) and children and Betty Hill and children. She also treasured her relationships with so many of the children in all these families, as well as many friends in cities across Canada. The Mass of Christian Burial was at Barat Residence, Halifax, Tuesday, July 12 at 10.30 a.m. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church in Winnipeg at 7.00 p.m. on Monday, July 25 to be followed by a reception in the church basement.
