STELLA VALERIE BACKMAN (nee STREMBICKI) Peacefully on July 24, 2005, Stella passed away at the Concordia Hospital. Mom was born on February 13, 1922 here in Winnipeg where she grew up and attended school. Right after school she went to work to help support her family. She eventually met Dad while working at Ashdowns. They married in 1954 and started their life together. She worked up until 1961 when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Stella is survived by her son Darryl (Sylvia) and daughter Karen (Kevin). Also surviving are her sisters, Rose, Mille (Jack), and Sharon Adele (Moon); as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel in 2003, mother Pearl, her father Peter, and her brother-in-law Peter. Mom resided at Concordia Place for the last three years. She made some friends there and no doubt will be missed by her special friend Bill. The family would like to thank all staffers who spent any length of time with her especially Lori. You truly were our go-to-girl. We would also like to extend our thanks to all who cared for mom in the E.R. and N1S. A special thanks to Leona, whose compassion was greatly appreciated. Mom was a kind and honest person who was dearly loved by her whole family. She'll be missed just as much by her family, and all that knew her. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. Interment will follow in Thomson In The Park Cemetery.
