GEORGE GAAIJE DE JONGE On July 24, 2005 George de Jonge passed away at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. George will be missed dearly by his loving wife Kiena (nee Huizing). George leaves behind a son Robert (Tamara) and grandchildren, Kimberley (Michael) Andres and Robert (Charlene) and extended grandchildren, Nilokai and Sergei and great-grandchildren. Also, he will be remembered by his brothers, Roelof (Gienie) and Max (Leny) in Holland and the many nephews and nieces. George was born in Valtermond, Holland on June 8, 1919. He met his wife in Holland and married during the war in 1943. They decided to go to Canada in 1954 to seek a better life. In Canada, with wife and son and some dear friends he started New life in Canada as a helper in a bakery on Main Street in Winnipeg. Having obtained his diploma in baker school in Holland, George soon moved to a baker's position. He then became employed at the Cooperators Bakery and progressed to the Bakery's Manager position. He was then asked to join the teaching staff of Tec Voc High School and for the next 19 years, until his retirement, enjoyed going to work every morning and was known affectionately as Mr. Dee . Dad was an active member of the Winnipeg Canadian Dutch Club and served as president for 12 years. The Dutch Clubs joined forces to become the Dutch Canadian Society of which dad was an active member also. For many years he played with the Holland Harmonicats at the Dutch Pavilion, as well as playing for the elderly in care homes. Dad was also known as The Cookie Maker at the Dutch Pavilion during Folkarama. Dad was a member of the Foresters. Dad was a faithful adherent of the Elmwood Community Reformed Church and he will be sadly missed by his Church family and the many friends he knew. Thank you to the staff of the Seven Oaks General Hospital for their care of my father during his last days. Thank you for making him comfortable. Funeral service will be held on July 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Glen Eden Funeral Home 4477 Main St. Viewing will be before the ceremony starting at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit 10, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
